ADRENAL FATIGUE

We are constantly under stress, whether it’s everyday stressors such as raising a family, workplace stressors, relationship stress, or situational crises such as illness, death of a relative or close friend, divorce, or loss of a job.

The main hormone we think about in relationship to stress is cortisol.. Cortisol is the master switch for all hormones so when cortisol levels are not optimum all other hormones can be disrupted.  This is why I always ask questions regarding symptoms of adrenal dysfunction when balancing hormones.

Cortisol levels can be elevated for a long period of time and this can cause symptoms including inflammation to the body and breakdown of muscle and bones, but this high level cannot be sustained and eventually cortisol levels decrease.  The cortisol levels plummet and now the adrenal gas tanks are running low on fuel and even more symptoms can set in.

What Role

Does Cortisol Play?

  • Controls blood sugar

  • Reduces inflammation

  • Regulates metabolism

  • Assists with memory formation

  • Regulates your blood pressure

  • Controls your sleep/wake cycle

  • Controls salt and water balance

Take a look at these graphs

that are were provided by testing saliva levels of cortisol at four timepoints throughout the day. Cortisol should be highest in the morning tapering off throughout the day and lowest around bedtime.

Higher than normal cortisol production throughout the day can result from prolonged stress demands.
The burnout pattern, also commonly called “adrenal fatigue” is really a reflection of low overall cortisol during the day.
